Winning Deck of GenCon 1995

Simon's Really Tough Tournament Deck

I’m finally getting around to organizing my Spellfire cards. In the process, I found a piece of paper describing the deck I used to win the Spellfire Tournament at GenCon 1995. I aptly name it “Simon’s Really Tough Tournament Deck”!

Download or view this classic deck:

  • Click here to download a PDF of my hand-written deck (it’s a somewhat large file: 780KB).
  • Or click here to download it in CrossFire’s DeckIt Format.
  • Or click here for a plain text file of the deck.

Then Vs. Now

Looking over this deck makes me nostalgic. It was a very different kind of Spellfire back then. Two of each card were allowed. Rule of the Cosmos was an optional rule. Maximum champion levels was 80 instead of 90. The tournament was one against one instead of three player. My how the game has changed over the years.

A couple memorable moments from GenCon:

  1. I hadn’t seen Onad the Weasel until playing some pickup games before the tourney started. I immediately traded for two and put them in my deck.
  2. I remember selling a Cyric for $4 to a guy who was dying to get his hands on one. That card was pretty common among my Spellfire friends. Perhaps we were just lucky with our booster picks.
  3. The guy who won the sealed deck tourney accidentally took the wrong trophy, so the one they gave me was actually the trophy for the sealed deck tourney. It didn’t matter because it was a piece of junk trophy anyway. The main central part of it fell off a couple months later. Here’s a photo of all that remains:

GenCon 2005 ???

And now, here we are in 2005, ten years later. GenCon looms ahead in August. I’m hoping to attend. I’ll need to trade for some of the cards that came out while I had quit the game (1995-July 2004). I need cards from all the boosters after Powers as well as 3rd and 4th edition. Then I’ll have a chance at making a deck that can hold it’s own against all the skilled players who didn’t take a 9 year vacation from the game like I did.

Was anyone reading this present at GenCon ‘95? Please leave a comment. I remember some of the faces, but no names sadly.
